GOOD NEWS: #ViganN7W Vigan City advances to the ‘top 21’ search for New Seven Wonder Cities

VIGAN CITY- ‘We’ve only just Vigan’- derived from the song ‘We’ve Only Just Begun’ by the Carpenters, describes what the people of Ilocos Sur is asking the public. More votes and a more active campaign to put Vigan City as one of the New 7 Wonder Cities of the World before the voting ends on October 7.

Vigan City as the only representative of the country in the search for the New 7 Wonder Cities of the World, made it to the top 21 finalists after the results of the first stage of selection process were announced on Tuesday, July 08, 2014 . The N7W is the same foundation that awarded Palawan’s Underground River in Puerto Princesa City in 2011 as one of the world’s New 7 Wonders of Nature.

The other finalists that made the cut were Barcelona, Beirut, Bangkok, Chicago, Doha, Durban, Havana, Istanbul, Kuala Lumpur, La Paz, London, Mendoza, Mexico City, Mumbai, Perth, Quito, Reykjavik, Saint Petersburg, Seoul and Shenzhen.

Bernard Weber, founder-president of N7W, said in a press statement that the diversity of the remaining cities in contention for the Canon of 7 is remarkable in terms of regional geography and urban culture. According to the organizers of the New7Wonders Cities campaign, Vigan was behind the competition, but got a second chance in the run to the July 7 cut-off.

In 1999, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has included Vigan in the World Heritage list because of the city’s ‘best practice in sustainable conservation and management of world heritage properties’.

Meanwhile, Vigan City Mayor Eva Marie Medina thanked all the people of Vigan and the Filipinos for supporting the campaign on its first phase. She said that a more difficult task is ahead of them to be included in the said list of wonders cities. She hopes that the national government help in actively campaigning and voting for the city.
