REVIEW: Tanghalang Pilipino's Mabining Mandirigma: a Steampunk Musical #TheaterPH #MabiningMandirigma

Mabining Mandirigma shows how Apolinario Mabini played an important role in the Philippine History. Despite of his physical challenges due to his illness, he still contributed a lot in terms of the brainstorming, acted as political adviser on how the government should be during Emilio Aguinaldo's term.

As per the musical itself, Arman Ferrer, who plays Emilio Aguinaldo, portrayed the role very well. With his big and classical voice, he is sure to conquer the musical stage in the next coming years. On the other hand, Delphine Buencamino, daughter of critically acclaimed character artists, Nonie Buencamino and Shamaine Centera-Buencamino, brings Apolinario Mabini into life. I know her being part of Daloy Dance Company but I didn't know that she can also act and sing. Truly, the artist's blood runs on her veins.

Here are the the things I love about Tanghalang Pilipino's Mabining Mandirigma: a Steampunk Musical:

1. Beautiful stage design by TOYM IMAO. It was an eye candy.

2. Apolinario Mabini played by an actress instead of an actor. It has a strong depiction of feminism for me as well as when American Leaders has been portrayed by female artists. At first I didn't get it why Ms. Buencamino has been chosen for the role but towards the second part, I saw how she transformed and saw the magic on stage.

3. It's my first time to watch Arman Ferrer performed and I was in awe. His voice is so strong it shows power and authority in every line he delivered.

4. Rap Battle or Flip Top number was fun! It's very intelligent to integrate it to the whole production to make the material more current. Younger audience will for sure enjoy this part too.

The musical play itself has a high production value from an awesome set design by Toym Imao, lights and sounds engineering by Katsch Catoy and TJ Ramos, digital projection by Ga Fallarme, costume design by James Reyes, choreography by Denisa Reyes, music direction of  Joed Balsamo under the direction of Mr. Chris Mallado.

You can watch Tanghalang Pilipino's Mabining Mandirigma: a steampunk musical from July 3 to 19, 2015 at CCP Little Theater.
